Does piracy matter? Opinion: If you’re going to be in the software business, your stuff is going to get stolen. Fact

STOLEN FROM FUTURE

I have replaced the content of this post with a link to the original on Techradar. Not because I was asked to, but because in my opinion it’s stealing and therefore, as grandma always told me, wrong.

The law may well disagree but if I create something and someone else uses it or distributes it I see it as theft. It does matter, it’s going to happen more and more and there’s not much can be done about it. I agree with Nikki in the comments for this entry:

Make it cheaper, easier to distribute and strangely less people Pirate.

  1. Nikki says:

DRM is the bane of many people’s lives, but perhaps one of the more frustrating aspects of legal software purchases are the silly agreements on CD sleves which proudly state that by opening and using the CD you’re agreeing to the terms of the licence, oh, and by the way, you’re also tacetly agreeing that you’re not going to be able to return the software if it doesn’t meet your requirements.

Add to that the frustrating scenario of the apple iTunes App Store, where any amount of money spent on an app to see ‘how good it is’ is gone forever, into that annoying pit of despair.

Perhaps software licences should be given on a temporary basis which you can revoke if it doesn’t meet your requirments… Sigh…

As for piracy. The more you protect something the more people want it. Ditto for price. Make it cheaper, easier to distribute and strangely less people Pirate.
